The Client

The Caldwell Group provides standard and custom material handling solutions for the construction industry.

The Challenge

 Caldwell came to us after spending a frustrating year trying to get the company's cumbersome, outdated website converted  to a Plone CMS. They had encountered so many problems and setbacks with the first web developer that we were hired to take over and complete the project.

The Process

 We first migrated the site to our server and removed the obstacles that were keeping Caldwell from adding new content while we worked on other functionality. As with any site that has had a previous incarnation, we began by identifying the "low hanging fruit" (small, easy tasks that would make a big difference), and from there determined the highest value features that were not yet in full working order.

• Because Caldwell has 9 product lines that apply to 16 different industries, the site was in need of a complex search mechanism. We were able to create ways for viewers to search either by product line or industry (something the previous developer had said was not possible).
• Print functionality was another high priority and we assured that the pages printed correctly and consistently in all browsers.
• At our recommendation, Caldwell agreed to upgrade the site to the latest version of Plone to reap the benefits of faster performance speed and greater usability.
• So that the hundreds of page URLs indexed by search engines on the original site were not broken, we used Plone's Redirect Tool to assure that pages on the original site were redirected to the proper page on the new site.
• When Caldwell later needed to integrate a separate website for Construction Lifters into their main site, we designed a landing page and added graphical links to browse the catalog of products.

The Results

 We brought this project to completion within 3 months, finishing about the same time the company was celebrating the transfer of ownership to its employees.
